Bryan Fuller talks 'Pushing Daisies'

This is an extremely interesting interview, IMO. Fuller discusses a lot of "what went wrong" for the show -- regarding the strike, ABC's lack of promotion or replays, and why they couldn't move the show to 9pm although it did better in that timeslot.

After the cancellation there was talk of moving to another ( Read more... )

They couldn't have moved it to a cable network like ABC Family or SyFy?

Considering how expensive the show was to produce, doubtful.

I don't really understand the other TV stations mentalities... What about Pushing Daisies made it an "ABC" show by any standards... It didn't seem all that common a show for this station

Well this is based on a possibly out of date mentality but I always sorta saw ABC as trying to be either more family friendly or female oriented (and those are basically akin). I mostly remember TGIF or the idea that they're owned by Disney and still sorta throw together family night programming. That said, I guess there was still a slightly unexpected undercurrent of edge which certainly did give them some credibility in terms of going for out of the norm programming decisions ( ... )

Ah, thanks for this explanation, it makes it a lot easier to understand. When looked at it like this, it seems like an HBO type of show...

Interesting interview. It was nice to hear from Bryan Fuller the producer, as opposed to Bryan Fuller the author ( ... )

But Pushing Daisies is another story. Not everybody digs excess. Some people dislike the narrator, others the "excessive quirkiness", others focus too much on the basic detective plots as if they were looking at CSI.
And, come on, even some fans of the show dislike the female lead, when Chuck is absolutely essential for the structure of the Pushing Daisies concept. Give Ned a normal relationship, and you have another story altogether.
So, it's not a show for unanimous opinions.

That happens with all shows. Some people like certain aspects, others don't; some people like certain characters, others don't... It's not specific to PD, even if it wasn't your average show. The fact that you can fin arguments about characters, storylines and pretty much anything on other fandoms proves it.

Well, maybe I didn't get my point across then. I'll try to explain it better ( ... )

Can someone explain to me the "hidden Dorothys" comment? As in "friend of"? Or does it not have anything to do with the Wizard of Oz or Judy Garland at all?

I can't tell if that's something about how they feature so prominently in the advertising but story-wise were hidden away since they didn't integrate very well at that point, or they would have had some juicy story to come but unfortunately their subplots tied up much more neatly by necessity?
