basically YES.
i actually wanted to like this, despite the fact that i've yet to see kstew in a film where i really felt like she became a character instead of fitting one and throwing in a few mannerisms for effort.
& so i was extremely curious to see if she'd play off/go toe-to-toe with Gandolfini and Melissa Leo's performances, but she seemed stuck on doing it her way.

in the end, i don't understand how it got the praise that it did because all i saw was a melodramatic story that they desperately tried to force into a story about grief, and it fell flat in all it's underwritten glory. haha.

anyway, looking forward to your review of Somewhere!

right? it was... painful. and she's a decent actor, when she gets things right. but here she was just a slightly more desperate version of herself. especially in the scene where Melissa Leo's character slaps her and she goes off on this tirade of "fuck you"s and it was so so... bland! she really, really lost me there.

i don't understand the praise, either, at all. there wasn't a single memorable or special thing about it.

a few hours later I rewatched Requiem for a Dream though, which seriously just emphasized how pathetic this film is for me. i mean, nothing really measures up to Requiem in terms of emotional impact anyway, lol, but it still just made me more frustrated about Rileys

ohgod there was soooooooooooo much potential for that scene and i literally wanted to shake her to try to get some emotion out of her.
unfortunately, the director's vision and what the actors tried to give us, couldn't compensate for that script.

Requiem for a Dream is one of those that i find hard to watch again because i always feel so emotionally drained afterwards. THE PERFORMANCES! <333

yeah, totally agreed.
the director is Ridley Scott's son, i think. so. you know. maybe he should stick to Black Hawk Down II or something...

yeah Requiem is more fantastic than I could appreciate the first time I watched it like five years ago. the performances are ridiculously pitch-perfect, the script is fresh, and it somehow manages to make the tried & tested heroin-downfall storyline new and engaging. THE SOUNDTRACK. the final 10 minutes or so of that film is probably the most emotional thing I've seen on screen, you become so invested in each character over the course of the movie. ughhh I could watch it again.
Black Swan cannot stand up to it, right?

BTW, have you seen Blue Valentine?

i'm a little peeved that they nominated Michelle Williams, but not Ryan. I don't hold it against he academy because I can't say that the ones that did get on the list don't deserve to be there, but it just misses the point to recognize half of what the film was.
then again, i also have to admit that i caught a moment where Ryan slipped in his performance where he could've given more. but the Ryan-lover in me chooses to blame the director on not asking for more. lol.

I haven't seen Blue Valentine yet, but I'll get a hold of it tonight (and probably Black Swan too, so I can get back to you on that).

from what I've heard, Ryan delivers a superb performance. the film looks great, and since I'm in the mood for emotional turmoil, I reckon I can handle it. is the infamous NC-17 scene as infamous as it was supposed to be, or was the MPAA being its usual overreacting, cockblocking self?

nah, the "NC-17" scene was being dramatic. The only reason they even brought it up is because they're sexist and think that it's alright to show a girl going down on a guy, but not okay if the roles are reversed.

interesting. i'll watch it! looking forward to it for sure.

have you seen Tron by any chance? i'm just pissed it didn't get nominated for best original score, but i have yet to see it... looks like fun. like plugging yourself into an electronic world.
