Never a caged beast. Never a domesticated one, either. In Kris's mind, the both of them were merely predators lying in wait. Biding their time. Waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Wolves in sheep's clothing, despite how much he despised the animal metaphor. And Kris was merely the agent sent to wake Cade from his slumber.

"Not bad," Kris would concede, setting for watching Cade intently, alternating his focus between Cade himself and the glass that the other vampire held in his hand. He smelt the wine and the blood mingled together, wrinkling his nose. He could never understand why some vampires would resort to bagged blood. Blood always tasted better, fresher when it was drunk straight from the victim, which was the reason why Kris would never give up the hunt ( ... )

The kiss was unexpected, unwanted, and while Cade had stiffened just a little at Kris' touch, the feel of the latter's lips on his skin rang several alarms in his mind.

'No. Don't touch me.'

He jerked his hand away, eyes widening once more, but it was a move too late. He could still feel it, a ghost imprinted on his hand, and with it came a deluge of other memories of another time and place. Memories of being the monster Cadriel Dawn, the one without soul, the devil child and his paramour. He had never allowed anyone else, man or woman, human or supernatural, to touch him the way Kris did. He had never given so much of himself, aside from his life to his sweet sire, to anyone else.

But he was Cade Lu now, a mere shadow of his former self. Touch and attachment and intimacy were the verbotenCouldn't Kris sense it yet ( ... )

The jerk away from him had been surprising, but Kris had seen it coming. He could sense it, already, from the very beginning when Cade had opened the door for him, that his former companion, his former lover was different. A shade. It was... disappointing. Just a bit. Maybe Kris had been expecting too much when he had come here, expecting that they could pick up where they left off. But Kris was nothing if not persistent.

Kris let Cade go, his gaze cautious even though his stance was relaxed, his eyes flitting downwards to drop down towards his clenched fists, the way Cade couldn't look at him in the eye. "Had I known. Had I known you were here, Cadriel, I would have found you sooner." A step closer, when Cade had set the glass back on the coffee table, leaving his hands free. Another step, to close the gap between them once more, his arm snaking around Cade's waist and pulling him in closer, a mimicry of a lover's embrace.

"Because I want more," he murmured, lowly, leaning in and almost brushing his lips along the shell of Cade's ( ... )

Think about it.

Cade's body had gone rigid once again when Kris persisted, arms still locked around himself as the other came close. It was familiar - too familiar, and Cade felt his senses failing, crashing and heightening all at once. How did Kris always have this effect on him? How did this not change despite the distance of time between them? He swallowed, an unmoving statue in the other vampire's hold, unable to ignore Kris' scent, both familiar and new. He was doing so well on his own in this city, carving out a pretence of the life he would have led had he been born in this time and age, a human and nothing more. But here Kris was, deliciously strong and tangible and the very epitome of the life he had tried so hard to keep buried in his past.

There was an odd emptiness he didn't quite expect when his former paramour stepped away. 'No. Don't do that. Stay.' But his mind did not listen. His body did not listen. And his mouth did not listen as he stared at the other man now, eyebrows creased and eyes narrowing coldly ( ... )
