Lord Henry had never noticed that particular door in his study before. It didn't matter, of course, it was trivial, probably an entrance his valet used and Henry had simply never noticed. "I would suggest you save your breath," says Watson, who so happens to be making his way down the hall at the right time.

"I'm afraid to be the bearer of bad news. That is to say, there's no way of telling where we are - other than it's an unknown mansion - nor a way of telling you how exactly you arrived." It's best to just cut to the chase, he finds. People take bad news better when it's delivered up front.

"How perfectly absurd," Lord Henry says, but doesn't seem quite displeased at the notion. "Have you seen the staff anywhere? I hope we've at least got a good cook."

"Only one, though there's something not quite right about her. Horribly motherly - I doubt it should take much time for you to meet her. Apart from that, there are only a handful of us."

Watson leans against his walking stick, watching the new arrival with mild interest.

Lord Henry shrugs, flips open his cigarette case, and offers one to Watson. "Better like a mother than a wife, I suppose."

But to each man his own, and this man certainly doesn't strike Watson as ever being the marrying type.
