According to the Guardian and the Press-Enterprise, the Menifee Union School District in southern California has pulled all copies of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary off class shelves, and is considering banning the book entirely. See, that's what I don't get. Aren't they supposed to be the wild, out of control liberals, San Francisco, Hollywood, all that? I wouldn't be so surprised if this happened in, like, Kansas. Still outraged, but not quite as astonished.

It depends where. Orange County is notoriously conservative (Trinity Broadcasting Network stationed there).

Also pretty sure there are some conservative religious areas in true Northern California (the Bay Area is mid-CA). Not so different from southern Oregon in that sense.

Actually it's happened before, to my dismay. Pretty much every book has been challenged at least, for one reason or another in one place or another. You'd think that alone would clue people in that *nothing* exists that *someone* won't find offensive somewhere. *sigh*

When I was a little kid I thought I was so cool because I found the word sex in the dictionary and showed it to the teacher.

I also wore a headband that I had written the word "burp" on because it was the worst swear-word I thought I could get away with wearing on my person.
