I hate Oregon Nazis. (Warning: This thread comes pre-Godwined.)

Ian, Shannon and I just found leaflets stuck under the windshield wipers of our cars, attributed to the National Socialist Movement. They are not written very clearly, but they seem to assert that the Auschwitz concentration camp wasn't really a concentration camp, or it was but it didn't really kill as many people as you think, or something. It ( Read more... )

A great way to fight these protests, if you can arrange it, is to get people to pledge to donate to a charity that the protesters really can't stand. When the target was the Westboro Baptist Church's picket of gay-owned businesses, for example, people used AIDS-relief charities; here, you might use the ADL or the SPLC. You get your donors to pledge to give a certain amount for each minute that the protesters spend doing their thing. Then you let them know about it, right before they start. If possible, have a crowd available to cheer them on - the longer they spew their hate-filled and Constitutionally-protective invective, the more money you raise. It's the best counter to IRL trolling.

Considering that such statements are illegal back home, the thought of the pamphlet contents is making me physically ill. Honestly, what is wrong with the world?

ETA: Can we fix the typo in Auschwitz, please?

Typo fixed.

Having been raised in the American constitutional tradition, I am always a little put off by the idea that certain assertions should be actually prohibited by law. Not that I can't see the argument for it (particularly in this case, particularly in Germany). I don't want to put these people in jail for saying these things - though I wouldn't mind suing the pants off them, if I could find a way to do it...

Thank you.

I can understand where you are coming from, of course. Freedom of speech and all that. Unfortunately, the illegality of pro-Nazi ideas and Holocaust denial was absolutely necessary for Germany to pull back together. It's not alone, you know. France and other European countries have laws like that too.

If you can find a way to sue them, let me know. I'll help in any way I can. ;)

I suggest sending an email to the Southern Poverty Law Center with the relevant information, if you haven't already done so. They track and catalog groups like this.

In fact, I've already been in contact with them, and sent them a scan of the flyer at their request. Someone there saw my post, apparently =}
