Tumbledown Barn

Mar 24, 2008 08:50

Spent the weekend in and around Albany NY. Drove by this crumbling ruin of a barn - still, apparently, being used as a workspace by someone, given the lumber and sealcoating and other stuff inside (not to mention an abandoned toilet) - on the way back from D's aunt's house (in someplace called Voorheesville) on Easter.

It flips me out when you talk about places I know about, but no one out of Upstate NY has heard of. Vorheesville! I think my school used to play them.

Also if you ever go to Saratoga Springs (which you should in the summer, not for the racing but for the concerts at SPAC) ask someone to show you the blue barn on Blue Barns road.

"blue barn on Blue Barns road" just about made me cry with awesomeness.

It's always been unclear if the named the street after the blue barn, or if someone decided to paint it blue because of the name.

In my particular burb there is a random house painted mustard yellow with a purple door. It's knkown throughout as "the yellow house with the purple door".

We get bored upstate, what can I say.

Ha! There's a house down the street from me that's covered in big, red polka dots. It's known as "the dot house"

My home province is peppered with abandoned barns, sheds and houses in rural areas and along The highways. There's something romantic about them despite their creepiness.

Oh, I make D crazy with it sometimes. Whenever I see a falling-down building I want to stop and take pictures of it, no matter if we're on a schedule or whatever.

I admit I prefer having him there, though, in case a wall falls on me or something.

And, I should add, he's pretty supportive of my super-amateur photographic urges overall.

Oh, completely! When I was a kid we would stop and check them out on road trips, but my mother used to freak out if I went in in without either her or my dad, if she let me in at all. My grandparents lived in the tiniest shitwater town that seemed completely full of abandoned barns, etc, so when the adults were visiting, we would all go out and play in these things. Now I can barely believe we we used to swing from the rafters, jump on the floor boards and rummage around in the coal cellars. Kids.....

It's awesome that D is so supportive. It helps when you're trying to get that perfect shot.

Dunno 'bout NY, but there are lots of snakes in MA in similar habitats. Mostly garter snakes, though.
