Hi! You guys remember me, right? (...right?) Yeah, I have been failing a little at commenting on anything lately. But I have still been reading my flist! Just. Quietly. And not the fic

ARGH I've read some really interesting feminist texts this year, but now all their names are escaping me. bell hooks (no capitals!) is pretty cool - a bit dated, perhaps, but she says interesting things in an interesting way, especially re black feminism. I may have a look through my essay bibliographies and see what else I can fiiiind.
bell hooks was mentioned a few times in Third Wave Feminism and Television, and she was one of the references that stood out as someone I might want to read, so if you're reccing her too, I'll definitely have to look into finding some of her work. TY! It is A++ pleasing to me when people rec me stuff on demand. Let me know if you are reminded of any particular awesomeness I should read by your bibliographies! \o/
I HAVE RIFLED. I don't know how you feel re psychoanalysis, but I find it v. interesting and Luce Irigaray is... also interesting. And also very 70s/80s French academic, so her stuff is a bit wacky to read and probably quite lost in translation, BUT! Interesting.
And I know I've read more, but Irigaray's the only thing directly feminist in my bibliographies. HMM.
I do not know how I feel about psychoanalysis! My entire knowledge of psychoanalysis is like, 'Freud is annoying sometimes', and that's pretty much it. That is probably a sign that I should do some more reading, TBH.
Thanks! I'd come across that book before and thought it looked interesting, but I never got around to acquiring a copy, and then I kind of forgot about it. Getting verification of it being interesting times from other fangirls is always good, too! I shall have to not loose the link this time.
I posted a while back about the one I was reading (Joanna Russ: How to Suppress Women's Writing) and I haven't picked up something to replace it yet - I'll be hitting up the university library as soon as I get my card (uh, there is a reason I can't have it yet even though I've been attending lectures for a week already). But you can be assured I will tell you about whatever I am reading whenever I am finally reading it! *smishes you*
Haha, I am writing an e-mail to you in another window. HI THEO. Help me design a feminist icon! At the moment I've been using this one (*points*) for feminist stuff but on the other hand there are so many catchy slogans and piccies to choose from!
That was you! I was talking with my mum about some of the feminism on LJ I'd been reading, and mentioned that 'someone had been reading this book on suppressing women's writing' but I had totally forgotten where, because that was when I was stuck in cereta's post and its spin offs and all the feminist goodness blurred together. But yay! I'd like to know what you're reading, yes, yes. :D *smishes baaack*
Oh man. I am not a great person to ask! I have been thinking I need feminism icons since forever. This is probably the closest I have! (Hahah, oh Superdictionary, YOU WILL NEVER NOT BE LULZY TO ME. And that's terrible.)
I WONDER IF I CAN FIND IT AT THE LIBRARY, HRM HRM I'LL BET I CAN
HAHA UHHHH MOST OF THE FEMINIST/WOMEN'S STUDIES/QUEER THEORY THINGS I HAVE READ HAVE BEEN ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN ACADEMIC JOURNALS (THAT I READ FOR CLASS) SO IDK IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A UNIVERSITY JOURNAL DATABASE OR ANYTHING?
SOME OF MY FAVORITES THAT I FREQUENTLY RETURN TO IN MY THINKINGS: 1. Gail Bederman, Manliness and Civilization: A Cultural History of Race and Gender in the United States, 1880-1917. BOOK. THIS THING IS REALLY SPECTACULAR. JUST SRSLY EVEN THO IT SEEMS LIKE A SMALL TIME PERIOD IT IS FOCUSING ON, I FOUND IT SO RELEVANT FOR THE ENTIRE CLASS I TOOK ON 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN CULTURE. 2. Lisa Duggan, "Queering the State," Social Text, No. 39 (Summer, 1994), pp. 1-14. ARTICLE. THIS THING GAVE ME SUCH AN ACTIVISM HARD-ON, NGL. I WISH SO HARD THE METHOD PROPOSED IN IT ("NO PROMO HETERO") WERE A REALITY AND THAT I COULD GO SIGN UP TO FURTHER THAT ACTIVISM CAMPAIGN RIGHT NOW. I'D SO DO IT.
I don't have access to a journal database, but Sex Wars: Sexual Dissent and Political Culture, by Lisa Duggen and Nan D. Hunter, was one of the three books I was most interested in picking up of the ones cited in Third Wave Feminism and Television, and google tells me Duggen's Queering the State is one of the essays printed in Sex Wars. So! Your rec of the article just makes me want to get a copy of that book more.
All of these recs seem really interesting! Feminism and science is v. relevant to my interests, and I've been feeling like I should read more on gender and race, so TY!
Good luck finding a copy of Third Wave Feminism and Television! Let me know what you think if you do read it. :D
