I think it is more I disapprove of them equally. In terms of sympathy, I feel a lot more for Sam and his behaviour/motivations, but as far as my approval is concerned they are both enormous twats, in their own special ways. They both need to be tied down and forced to talk about their feelings until they learn how to COMPROMISE and BE A TEAM and HUG MORE.
LOLOL, when I was writing that question I did start out with "I disapprove more of [whichever] this season", but I changed my mind. Maybe I should have left it like that!
I like to think the first question covers the sympathy thing, because you can totally be sympathetic but still all "Nooo! Stop thaaat!" or "...you are doing this for all the wrong reasons. :(" or whatever.
I did kind of mean their methods of dealing with the apocalypse more than their methods of dealing with each other with the 'approval' questions. I think everyone agrees that they need to be forced to deal with their feelings until they can both treat each other better. Although I guess maybe understanding each other would also be the best course of action in terms of saving the world from apocalypse, as well as in terms of saving their relationship from angstfestland.

Whether or not something is morally correct does not change based upon the situation. It's possible for the correct choice in a situation to be the morally incorrect option, however that does not negate the immorality of the act.
For example- If you had to murder one person to save a million, committing the murder would probably be the best choice and most people would probably do it. This does not mean, however, that murder becomes morally correct simply because it is the best option. It is still morally wrong.
Does this make sense? Lol I am trying hard to be coherent.

That seems to make sense to me! It's kind of like you've split what I bundle together as 'morality' into two different scales, one for 'rightness - wrongness' and one for 'should do - shouldn't do', and sometimes you are in a situation where you should do something wrong, but it's still a wrong thing to do, and you have to live with that. Am I interpreting something like correctly?

Yes exactly!
Omg I'm so glad that you understood what I was trying to say because I am operating on no sleep whatsoever and my brain is not really functioning right now.

Well I have a lot of practise following my own sleep deprived logic, and you were certainly a lot more coherent than that! *g*
I'm trying to figure out what rightness and wrongness mean independently of what you should or shouldn't do, because I am so used to thinking of them as one thing.
Is it that 'wrong' things are things you should feel bad about having done?
Like, if you killed someone to save a million others, you should feel the pain of the remorse you would have felt had you killed someone without saving anyone, but given that saving those million people was what you should have done, you shouldn't feel the regret? ('Regret' as in 'desire to have acted differently'.)
I approve of where Sam's motivations - protect Dean, save the world; and I understand where Dean is at - recovering from trauma is something I understand intimately and maybe I do make it too personal when Sam calls him weak. I can also see where Dean is coming from - he's coming from a place where, at some point, torturing other people looked right. Of course he's going to need to examine the situation from all sides and shy from moral ambiguity
( ... )
Yes, I agree with this mostly. I think it's just that, personally, I still haven't decided if Sam is doing it because he likes it or not. I think he does like it, but I'm not sure that is yet why he does it. I think as much as he like the power, he might stop if he really did think the apocalypse was averted and he and Dean were safe from more angelic/demonic interference. I'm kind of giving him the benefit out the doubt until I see the finale. (This is actually one of the things I think might be this season's cliffhanger - Sam coming right up to a moment where it's clearly 'step over that line, or don't', and then the season ending and leaving us hanging on who Sam will be next season
