Ha! I knew it! This is definitely a simulated environment. I just walked off heading away from town, and not twenty minutes later it looped back around on me and I ended up approaching town from the opposite direction. And before anyone says it, I didn't just get turned around. I made sure to go in the direction of the sun the whole time.
Good news is, that means we're one step closer to figuring this out. I'm betting whoever's in charge of this is only going to let us travel in the direction of the trail. Bad news is, this means I still haven't ever visited Earth.
