I really like what Marian Price has to say here:

The only threat that Provisional guns pose are to people who disagree with their strategy. I don't think that they pose any threat to the British or the Loyalists. My anarcho-pacifist tendencies have always made me wary "armed struggle" and the romanticized/fetishized image of it in certain segments of the Left. Once you have won your campaign, how do you get the gunmen to give up their guns? At what point do the gunmen turn said guns against their own movement? How thin is the dividing line between a gunman and a thug? Experience, in Ireland and elsewhere, shows it is perilously thin ( ... )
