Chicago

Just a little while ago, I was flipping through the channels, and stopped to watch the opening scenes of some dumb Sandra Bullock movie just because it was a montage of clips of one of my favorite places on Earth: Chicago.  I have a connection to that city which goes back to my childhood, and can still remember trips to the Field Museum, Shedd ( Read more... )

Unlike Dublin and New Orleans, I would not want to imagine actually living in Chicago. But, I liked being close enough that I could visit whenever I wanted to.

Yeah, I spoke to Mosier just a little while back. He's supposed to be down here sometime in May. Not that I imagine I will be seeing him all that often. But, hell, it looks like a nice place he's found for himself, and fairly remote and private it looks like.

I miss the Electric Shadow from time to time...

I always wanted to go to Chicago. It always just seemed like it had such a great spirit. A lot of cities anymore feel generic... but I wouldn't picture Chicago to be that way.

Yeah, I would definitely say that Chicago is not generic. Though, I have to admit, and not happily either, that it is moving in that direction, to some degree, and in certain places. Some of the condo developments that have been going up in the past several years (mostly in the south Loop) look just like condos one might see in any other big city, and there are other developments that have no unique or distinctive character which ruin the overall feel of some neighborhoods.

But, in large part, because of its tradition of great architecture---Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright for starters---Chicago has a distinctive look that would be very hard to destroy. I very strongly recommend visiting.

Yeah, I actually think I have an account or a profile, or whatever you call it, on Flickr. But, I've never posted anything. Whichever way I go, I will post them here on LJ.

Whenever I try to get into specifics about what I love about the city, it doesn't seem to hang together all that well---this detail here, and that one over there---because it's the way all the details come together that matters. I do not know how to describe it. And, as you say, there are plenty of things that make it frustrating... but, still... ya gotta love it!
