I have always loved the sky at this time of year---really, from mid-October all the way through the beginning of April---especially in the evening as it fades to an almost transparent blue on the horizon, fading almost to white that shades into a pale yellow as the sun fades away in the southwest.  Here in Bloomington, I love riding the bus home in ( Read more... )

Neighboring towns in northwest Indiana, Hobart in Lake County, and Portage in Porter County. But, for all intents and purposes, they run together, along with Lake Station, into one indefinable mass. Once upon a time, they were both small towns about 12 miles apart. But, as subdivisions grew on the fringes, and strip malls were built on the fringes of those, and then more subdivisions, etc., they grew into each other. In the case of Hobart, you can still find the old downtown, arrayed alongside Lake George, and it has some quaintness to it. The old downtown of Portage is almost impossible to locate now, and they have manufactured a phoney downtown, with new city hall, police station (conveniently, right next to the new Dunkin' Donuts), etc. a mile or so from where the old one is/was.
