I'm looking to start learning upright bass. Does anyone know any good music teachers in the Boston area, how to play upright bass, where to find a cheap good used one or any other information. I've been doing a lot of research on it myself, but if anyone knows anything it'd be appreciated ( Read more... )

I saw punk and folk together and they combined into polka. I was so confused.

Heh, I know what you're talking about, not exactly looking at that combination, more of the sound of blues with a harder punk sound.

Well... I do technically know how to play it (half a semester in string methods), but it's been a looooooong while. Couple observations: They're a pain to haul around, and the wood ones in particular have to be kept in fairly controlled environmental conditions (not too much or little humidity, not too hot or cold). They do make plexiglass double basses, but the sound quality tends not to be as good (it's what I learned on... decent tone quality is possible, but it takes a lot more finickiness). In terms of teachers in the Boston area, I might check out the music schools and see if there's a student there (preferably masters or upperclassman performance undergrad major) who is offering lessons. They would probably either come to your apartment for lessons, or have an instrument for you to use at their studio, since as I said before, basses are a pain to move around. They also would probably be able to hook you up with someone who might be selling their beginner or used instrument. You could also look at an online store like ( ... )

Definitely useful information, I've been doing a lot of research on my own.
I'm actually more interested in Pizzicato and Slap Bass styles of playing than with a bow.
I actually found a friend of a friend who is going to let me try out a couple of his basses and give me a few pointers. Then I'm going to probably check around for some grad students from Berkley or such.
Thanks for the info though, it's a good addition to what I've learned so far about them.

There's a lot of hair missing in that icon pic.

Looks good, and you know I'm a sucker for long hair.

Thanks! I'm glad you approve, even though it's not long anymore. I decided it was time for a new look. Good luck on starting grad school by the way. It's going to be awesome and hell all in one!
