So, I'm reading along in a fic, and come across a particular phrasing that is blatantly racist.  You know, everything's fine and normal fic-ishness, the author drops this little racist bombshell, then moves on like there wasn't just an explosion in the reader's face, and I'm like "Wha- Huh ( Read more... )

Personally I'd just leave it be and move on and just try to forget it by reading something else and probably making a point, if it's something that really bugs me, not to read anything else by the person.

Ditto, TBH, if someone is getting hair & eye colour wrong, I'd shrug & leave it. Well I might moan to myself or a friend or here, but I wouldn't contact said author - unless I knew the person.

The whole offering suggestions, etc. can just lead to upset & stress and arguments and is often more trouble than it's worth.

But that's just me who will avoid conflict at any cost.

I, too, am one to avoid conflict, whenever possible. I thought about it overnight, though, and decided that racism is a different kettle of fish than the usual fandom ish and is something I think should be confronted or, at least, pointed out. I'm still not sure if the author realized how that phrasing comes across.

It all turned out to be moot, however. While I was considering, someone else commented on it, very politely, and the author replied back, very politely, and removed the phrasing, so... I'm glad it turned out that way.

It was other authors who got the hair and eye colors wrong, and it's... baffling. Okay, it is hard sometimes to tell a person's eye color on TV, but if you read fic! This guy's blue eyes are mentioned a lot, and they are really a striking shade. You can tell his eye color on TV. Unless you've got a B&W TV. ::g:: Hair color, I dunno. Blonde... black... Yep, they look exactly alike. ;-)
