Hee! ::g:: Well, "reader" is exactly that. Man, I felt so stupid when I finally figured that one out! The story pairs a canon character with a generic character - the "reader" or sometimes listed as "you" in the pairings - so, I guess, the reader can imagine themselves with said canon character as they read the fic. I think they sometimes call these stories "Imagines," too.
It seems to be a thing in AU fics where the characters are stratified as Alphas, Betas, and Omegas. On the plus side, I finally twigged to what authors mean when they label their fics A/B/O. ::g::
Oh, these crazy, young fanfic authors these days. I feel so out of it.
*Blinks* *Blinks again* Er, why? *Scratches head* Okay . . . It seems mighty strange to me, but I guess if people like it/want to write/read it, then who am I to object? I don't get it, it makes zero sense to me, but then TBH so much stuff in fanfiction these days makes zero sense. Thank you for that.
*Blinks again* Golly, that's . . . Um . . . Well now . . . Each to their own *Shakes head*
LOL! I know! The fanfic world has changed so much since I first got in it. As you say, to each their own, though. Goodness knows there are folks who still think we plain old slashers are weird, so...
Now I'm trying to figure out what "freeform" means...

As to "knotting," I'll refer you to here:
