[ picard was most upset over the latest news that was delivered to him by holly. the young captain kirk from 2258.50 was no longer a captain. the young man had resigned his starfleet commission in as official of a way as one could get on this space station. he'd learned about it while the former captain was mingling with those who were part of a ( Read more... )

[ kirk never understood why people flipped out when he acted responsible. or at least what he thought was responsible. the biggest difference between him and the james t. kirk everyone knew was that... well, he never knew really what responsibility was. he thought that becoming a captain would magically hand him the answer. but he was realizing that it was a childish realization.

he sat down in front of picard. he noticed the change in tone and way he addressed him. he didn't roll his eyes, he just stared straight at the man. he listened to what he said but didn't give a reply. everyone else in the station, save holly, thought it was something of a childish reaction.

apparently james t. kirk wasn't allowed to think logically. ]

[ the young man was remaining silent. interesting, but probably for the best. the kirk from his timeline -- albeit older -- had happily retorted against picard's statements, but they were two entirely different men. picard knew this, he'd known it from the get-go. they had their similarities, but they were vast contrasts of eachother. ]

I will, however, commend you for the responsible course you have taken in removing yourself from the chain of command until you are able to sort out your...issues, but frankly, Kirk, you shouldn't have allowed as much to reach this point in the first place. A captain knows when to put their foot down, knows where that line is that lies between friendship and comradeship is. You were a commanding officer. You should have known better.

Probably.

[ he leaned back in his chair and waited for the older captain's retort. he wasn't trying to pick a fight. spock had mentioned, the commander spock from his crew, that there were things kirk couldn't do. trying to hold the crew together when there were so many personal issues to work out was pretty impossible. then again it seemed the only one in his crew willing to follow orders against their personal judgment was spock. ]

Personally, I think you spent too much time focusing on the friendship side than you did on the side of the line that makes you their captain. Sometimes, you cannot be your crew's friend. They'll be cross with you for it, but it's something that comes with sitting in that chair. A captain must be able to do what needs to be done and not what others want them to do.
