If you've never heard of it, it's a speck of land in the Pacific Ocean. It was strip-mined almost into oblivion for decades, which brought in a ton of money that got squandered in the early 1990s

I think I heard about this, probably on NPR or the BBC. Am I mixing it up with another tiny island nation, or are they also about to be submerged by the rising oceans? That's the part of the story I recalled: life was and has been utter shit, they have almost no part of their island left unmined, pretty soon they won't even have the island, and no other nation is willing to give them citizenship.

I may be combining the stories of two different islands, not sure, which is just sad in its own way. There shouldn't be two separate places that fucked over.

Yeah, this was on NPR, and yeah, they're likely to lose the last habitable part of the island to rising sea levels within the next few decades.
