Months of silence, and this is how I break it: BOOK MEME!

Jun 25, 2008 20:15

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicise those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them
5) Put a star next to those you've only partially read.

Wow, that's really impressive!

I love Jane Austen too, but somehow I haven't read Emma or Persuasion yet; I did see Persuasion on Masterpiece Theater a couple of months ago though.

Heh, my social life as a high schooler involved a lot of Victorian authors XD

Emma is great, in fact they say the plot of Clueless was based off of it!

[Brevity notes: 1 I've read no Jane Austen at all. Which would you recommend to a first-timer? 2: of Dickens I've read only David Copperfield, 2 Cities, Oliver Twist and Xmas Carol.]]

2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien

3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte

4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling

5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee

6 The Bible*

7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte

8 Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell

9 His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman

11 Little Women - Louisa M Alcott

12 Tess of the D'Urbervilles - Thomas Hardy

13 Catch 22 - Joseph Heller

14 Complete Works of Shakespeare *

15 Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier

16 The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien

17 Birdsong - Sebastian Faulks

18 Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger

19 The Time Traveller's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger

20 Middlemarch - George Eliot *

21 Gone With The Wind - Margaret Mitchell
(--one summer all I did was read this book, the LOTR trilogy, and James Michener's Hawaii over and over, in rotation. Got through them each at least 3 times, if I recall. I was so happy.)

Hmmm, where to start with Austen? I would probably recommend Pride and Prejudice, as the main character is very accessible and it contains most of her main themes about the difficulties of being female and middle class. Persuasion is somewhat of a departure from her normal work, but it's also very good.
