She puts her hand against his chest, the double drumbeat. She's obviously thinking about it. Polyrhythmic. Faster than hers, and infinitely slower. Some songs only have three verses.

"It was-" he starts, and can't. "It was different." She lies in patient silence and waits for him. It's so kind. He decides to try and catch up. There was music. There was always music. It played in the streets and hummed in the sky itself when he looked up; it only stopped when he stopped it. "There weren't bands and clubs and records," he says. "There were concerts. There was ceremonial music. But we did have stuff from Earth. It was in fashion for a while, when I was young. It was a way to show off that you didn't care." He frowns, remembering. "The elders called it primitive."

You write them at their absolute and very best, no matter what, I hope you know. Even if it always ends up making me cry, somehow, when they're just meeting The Beatles before they're The Beatles and I should only be smiling instead.
