I haven't done an empirical investigation of the matter, but I think S1 has more meh episodes per capita than any other season. Although finding its footing is a compelling mitigating circumstance, I still think I'd go with S1 as my least favourite. But, like you, I wouldn't meant it and it would kind of be like calling Yorkies my least favourite chocolate bars - it's *still* delicious chocolate.
I was just thinking, one of the other things that compensates for the slightly more "meh"ness of S1 episodes is its lighter tone all over. Sure, Jess died, but Dad's still out there to be found, and destiny and apocalypse and psykids and whatnot weren't even on the radar yet. (Well, maybe John's, but anyway.) For light brotherly moments, S1 has all the rest beat. And that goes a long way, for me.
