# Tsotsi (2005) - I think my expectations were too high. Or maybe there's a reason they tapped Gavin Hood for Wolverine. This is basically a Hollywood movie.

HOW I AGREE. !!!!! I think that's why it was so successful :(

# I can't STAND the guy in A bout de souffle; it's one of my friend's favorite movies, but I have to pretend it's a one-person star vehicle for Jean Seberg and her look boy (you have to pronounce this in a French accent, it's just the rule).

# I get that A Foreign Affair must be significantly less entertaining minus the game of "I LIVE there, omg it's nonexistent/a burnt-out husk!" ... in my mind, John Lund gets transferred somewhere else (how about Switzerland) and then it can be all Marlene Dietrich/Jean Arthur (or &), all the time.

This comment makes it look like I spend all my time mentally editing men out of movies!

Belmondo? I think he is insufferable, but on purpose. (It better be on purpose, or I'm going to lose faith in humanity.)

Tsotsi would have been better without the men.

The thing is, I think it isn't on purpose. I base this on observation of my friend, who is basically the exact target audience (insofar as that's possible in 2009) for that movie, and who prefers him to the girl :(

But the whole point is that he's an imitation . . . Like, he's only hanging around with Jean Seberg because she's American. He has that thing about American cars. But he's not James Cagney or Humphrey Bogart because not even Cagney and Bogart were. They only hold up under so much pressure. I have a friend who likes it, partly because she thinks Belmondo is beautiful, but I don't really know how she feels about Michel. She's studying film though, so maybe I should talk to her about it some more.
