That would seem to be an improvement, because frankly the time he was just sitting completely motionless kind of freaked her out a little.
Now she just has to figure out if being careful means being careful about approaching him or not approaching him at all and she hates -- she hates -- not knowing how to deal with saying hello to someone she thinks of as a friend, because that shouldn't be something you have to analyze all this terribly much.
And then there's the realization that he can hear her trying to analyze the ramifications of saying hello to him or not, and how insanely rude is that? Given that she's thinking about him, and he no doubt knows that she's thinking about him, she really should just go ahead and say hello, except, of course, that actually saying hello is kind of redundant at this point, although it's also rude to interupt him while he's playing and --
He's not sure Carlisle will even look at him. When it's not about Bella, or someone else.
His sister promised that the girl who saved him, who he's now proposed to, unanswered, is going to be one of them. And his family is riding on the edge of a disaster crater that barely seems touchable, no less fixable.
It wasn't even a question with Esme. It wasn't scott-free forgiveness, but it wasn't even a question. The same with Emmett, except minus the second part, and additional ribbing about learning 'to just let things go.'
Alice was willing to be angry and hurt, to deal while demanding he never even make her see one vision of him contemplating that kind of stupidity again. And Rose.....he still wasn't speaking more than two or three word sentences to her.
But Carlisle -- You've chosen not to live without her, and that doesn't leave me a choice. -- and the Volturi -- Aro's plans. Alice's promise -- and that shapeshifting boy.
It's not what he was going to say originally. But maybe that because he doesn't know what that one would have been either anymore. He hazards something else. Some scope, a frame, a reference.
"It's been seven months since Bella's birthday."
He still twinges slightly saying her name. Even if it's something he doesn't notice.

She studies him for a moment.
"May I asked what's happened, or what's happening?"

It's so big. An endless tragedy of well-meant actions.

And then . . .
It's what?
