The room was silent for what seemed like a decade, as Beth watched the two vampires. She pushed back a strand of blond hair absentmindedly. She wanted to believe that Mick didn’t kill the man who had dismembered Aurora Stardust, but the way Josef had phrased his last statement made it sound like Mick had. Would it do her any good to question Mick further on the topic since he seemed so reluctant to talk about the topic.

She caught Josef’s eyes for a second, and he gave her a smirk. Merriment danced in his eyes. Beth thought he seemed to know exactly what she was thinking, and it was driving her crazy.

She crossed her legs very carefully, and wondered if she should play the silent game with the two vampires; letting all the questions she had remain unasked. She would probably be the first one to break the silence though. Her mind was filled with so many questions, that she didn’t know what she was supposed to be saying right now anyway.

Beth needed to think of something to concentrate on this nerve-grating silence continued, she was just about to start coming up with something to keep her mind distracted when Mick broke the silence.

“So, how was San Francisco?” Mick voice was neutral, and she couldn’t tell if the question was intended as a loaded question or not. Mick seemed at times okay with her relationship with Josh, but Beth wondered sometimes if there was also a slight tinge of jealous whenever the topic of Josh came up.

No matter what Beth did to try to regain them, her feelings for Josh were definitely starting to lessen. Unfortunately, her feelings for Mick were also growing, and that caused a conundrum, because she had never quite been able to read how Mick really felt about her.

“San Francisco was okay. Josh ended up working a lot, so I explored the city by myself for the most part.” The way she said it was in a tone that distinctly said that she really didn’t want to discuss the whole supposed romantic weekend.
Josh had promised her that it would both be good for them to take some time away from work, and had convinced Beth to leave her laptop at home. Little did Beth know apparently time away from work meant just Beth, since apparently Josh’s job was too important to take a few days off from working. The weekend had made Beth realize regardless if Mick had come into her life, that her relationship with Josh was already probably at the turning point.

In the beginning, he had seemed to think what she did was just as important as his work. He had been supported, letting her run ideas by him, and all the things that a good supportive boyfriend was supposed to do. She wasn’t sure when his thinking shifted where she should be working at a more prestigious place than Buzzwire.

“Sorry to hear that,” Mick drained what had to be his fourth or fifth glass of blood. Beth wasn’t sure because she had stopped counting. It was weird to watch Josef and Mick drink and to know they weren’t drinking wine, but blood.

Mick wiped his mouth with one of the paper napkins that Beth had left on the table earlier from her dinner. He gave her a soft smile, as if he was here if she needed to talk about something.

Josef’s cell phone went off, and he got up in a graceful move and walked into the kitchen before he answered it. He seemed to be verbally assaulting someone the minute he opened the phone.

“Is there a reason you want to divert talking about the Aurora Stardust case?” Beth asked trying to put the conversation on the earlier topic.

“It didn’t turn out like I expected, and I don’t want to talk about it. It is probably a similar reason to why you don’t really want to talk about San Francisco.” Mick gave her a sort of sad smile, as hopefully they could call a truce and neither would have to talk about subjects they didn’t really want to talk about.

“Sorry.” Beth still felt like he was deliberately keeping something from her, and her questioning Mick's motives thanks to Josef wasn’t helping her any.

“It’s not your fault.” He closed the bottle of blood, and seemed pondered the empty bottle.

He must be running low, and making a mental note to go see his dealer for more, Beth thought. It was weird to think of Mick having a dealer since that word had such a negative connotation.

They could hear Josef cursing loudly in the kitchen.

“Can I ask you a question about the Stardust case though? Just one, I promise.”: She gave him an innocent smile, like she wouldn’t hound him for information.

“I guess you can ask one.” His voice seemed a bit tired, and it made Beth feel guilty that they had woken him up earlier.

“Did you kill the man who dismembered those two girls?” She tried to make it sound more like a question, than an accusation.

“No, I didn’t.” He glanced back in Josef’s direction for a millisecond. “Josef has a way of projecting his paranoia unto other people.” Mick chuckled softly as if he had been expecting a worse question.

“Okay.” Beth felt a bit better now, and told herself to not let anything Josef say affect her until she knew all the facts of a situation.

“I am glad it didn’t come to the point of me kil---“
Mick was interrupted by a loud shout of “You Incompetent Bastard!” from Josef, before he slammed his phone down and came back towards Beth and Josef. “Do you guys want to go out and do something. I am bored.” He said with a fake yawn.

“You want me to come out with you guys?” Beth tried to wonder what going out with two vampires would be like. She wasn’t sure she was ready for that, especially if Josef, who has a preference for fresh blood, decided to feed in front of her.

“We’re just going to a club, nothing that will scar your mortal soul, Bethy.” Josef gave her the smile a kid might use to trick someone into giving them candy.

“I am not going anywhere today, Josef, I am going back to sleep.”

Josef furrowed his eyebrows slightly. “You are no fun sometimes.” He turned to Beth, and gave her a smile. “What about you, do you want to hit the town with me?”

Beth glanced at her wristwatch. “I probably should really check in with work, I probably have a ton of things at the office that I need to do.”

“Suit yourself.” Josef was gone before he finished the statement.

“I am off, too, so you can get back to sleep. Good night.” She picked up her coat and purse from the back of the couch.

“Be careful out there.” Mick said in a concerned voice, as he walked her to the door.

She might be more suspicious of the comment, if he hadn’t got into a habit of saying that when they left each other’s company.

Beth almost gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek before she left, but she settled on just waving.
