Author Notes: A tiny little ficlet inspired by Tom Wait's song Shiny Things, which is also where the quote comes from. I'm still trying to slowly approach these two characters, concrit is muchly appreciated even though I know it's difficult to judge something this short.

Though the only I want that shines is to be king
Here in your eyes
To be your only shiny thing
Arthur has always known he's going to be king some day.
People have been telling him as long as he can remember. He has been taught how a king acts, how he fights, how he treats his people, how he dresses, how he eats, how he sleeps and even breathes.
But Arthur had never truly understood what his future entailed, until he hears Merlin talk about the king that's going to be and sees the ardour and devotion in his eyes.
It's a shock when he realises that Merlin thinks he is going to be that king.
A shock, and yet a moment of breathtaking lucidity.
Yes, he is meant to be king, and yes, he wants to become the best king Camelot has ever had.
And he needs Merlin to be able to look at him like this always.
Only now does he see the significance of all his lessons.
He has been taught to shine amidst men, but no one has ever taught him how not to fall in love.
With the image Merlin paints of his future self.
And with Merlin.
