A Colour Sale

Alice stared down at the basket sitting in front of her. It was a small basket but it was overfilled with little orange candy pumpkins. Alice hated the things, she always had. Yet every year at Halloween she managed to accumulate a large pile of the vile orange candy.

She was sitting on her bed fingering the candy when Dinah jumped onto the bed with a meow and tried to bat one of the pumpkins with her paw. Alice shook her head as she patted the cat.

“Now Dinah, I don’t think cats are supposed to eat candy.” She sighed. “I don’t want to either but it’s such a waste to throw them out every year.” Dinah meowed again.

“Well I could give them to my friends but none of them like them either. Anyway none of them even bothered to go out trick or treating this year. They say that fifteen is too old to go out. I don’t care though, I had a good time!” With a sniff Alice went back to looking at the candy.

Dinah mewed and jumped off the bed. Alice got up and looked over at her mirror.

“That’s a good idea Dinah, I bet some one in wonderland might like this candy!”

Grabbing the basket Alice walked over to the mirror and without hesitation walked through it as though it were a curtain.

After a few moments of falling, Alice had managed to keep a hold of her basket, and landed neatly on the ground in Wonderland. She decided to go and see the Mad Hatter and March Hare, they were most likely in the middle of a tea party, so she headed towards their house.

The Mad Hatter and the March Hare were not in fact in the middle of a tea party, they were running in and out of the house, bringing things out in a hurry.

“What’s going on?” Alice called out as she walked into the yard. The March Hare stopped and dropped what looked to be a large red ball onto the ground and paid no attention to it as it bounced off.

“A disaster that’s what!” The March Hare exclaimed in his usual dramatic nature.

“What’s a disaster?”

“It’s the colour sale and we have nothing yellow.”

“How true that is.” The Mad Hatter said walking over holding a small orange vase. “We sold everything yellow at last year’s sale and now we don’t have anything.”

Alice frowned in confusion. “What’s a colour sale?”

“Why it’s a sale held here where you have to sell something of every colour.”

“It really is delightful.” The March Hare piped up from the side. “Last year I bought an orange vase.” He looked over at the one in the Hatters arms. “In fact that’s it there…hey!”

“We needed something orange.” The Hatter replied as way of explanation. “Besides it’s the only vase we have that isn’t broken.”

“You’re right.” The Hare said after a moment of thought.

“Isn’t that a good thing?” Alice asked.

“Why Alice, of course not.” The Hatter replied as though it were obvious. “It doesn’t fit with the décor”

He said this with a spread of his hands and while doing so dropped the vase.

“Well now it fit’s.” The Hare said looking down at the now cracked vase.

“Well you can have these orange candies if you want.” Alice said holding out her basket of orange pumpkins.

“No that’s alright Alice.” The Hatter replied. “What are you going to sell for your colour sale if you don’t have any orange?”

“Well I could help you two sell your things.” Alice suggested.

The Hatter and Hare looked at each other, whispered conspiratorially and then grinned. “Sure Alice, you can help us.” They replied.

“Now we just have to find something yellow.” The Hatter mused, “Something yellow, something yellow.”

Alice thought.

“I have a yellow bandana, would that work?” She pulled out her yellow and orange stripped bandana. “Oh wait, it has orange in it too.”

“I’ll fix that.” The Hatter said and grabbed the bandana from Alice’s hand and whipped a pair of scissors, a needle and some thread out from somewhere. In a moment there lay two small piece’s of cloth.

“There now we have something yellow.” The Hatter exclaimed, proudly showing off his creation.

“But it’s just a small piece of cloth.” Alice said looking at it. “Who would by that?”

“I bought one last year.” The Hare proclaimed pulling a grey piece of cloth out of his pocket.

Alice just shook her head in amusement.

“Well let’s start organizing the rest of our stuff.” The Hatter said putting the yellow piece of cloth in the basket of orange candies Alice was holding. He and the Hare then proceeded to run back into the house.

As Alice ran over to the oddly shaped house to search for more colours, she couldn’t help but be glad that had received those orange candies. This was proving to be a most interesting day.
