I've just under a hundred pages left of Wuthering Heights. Cathy the younger -- wow, what a little bitch. I cannot read any of these scenes where she interacts with Hareton without wanting to smack the shit out of her! She is not better than her mother at all, just more naive and brought up in better conditions. I can see this will not end happily ( Read more... )

I just finished that book! I found most of the characters infuriating, including young Cathy.
Also, I couldn't really figure out why this book is supposedly such a classic, but maybe we can discuss that when you're finished.

I know! I cannot fathom why we are supposed to sympathize with characters that are just as bad as the villainous ones in their ways. Mr. Linton was an idiot for being blinded by shallow beauty in the elder Catherine and their daughter a thoughtless snob and something of a bully on top of it! I am enjoying this read though -- I'm having a rather misanthropic sort of week so this is just the sort of thing I want to read right now. But dammit I cannot feel a bit of pity for ANY of these people! Well, I feel bad for Hareton but he's not the focus here anyway.

But yeah, give me a couple days and we'll bitch and moan about everyone in this book :-)

I fucking hate Wuthering Heights. Jane Eyre beats its ass any day, hands down.

Hell yeah! Better plot, better characters... and, c'mon, can you even compare Mr. Rochester to Heathcliff? NO! :)

That's interesting - I detested Cathy the elder, but felt some pity for Cathy the younger. Though I wanted to hit her for the way she talked to Hareton, so I completely agree about her being a little shit. I just loathed Cathy the elder - spoilt, self-centred, manipulative ... In some ways, I could find excuses for Cathy younger that I couldn't for Cathy elder.

I think it's an amazing book though. Jane Eyre is one of my all-time favourites, ever since I first read it in grade 6, but Wuthering Heights is arguably more impressive in scope and subject matter etc. Less fun to read though!
