Summary: The twelfth, whose good wish still remained unspoken, came forward, and as she could not undo the evil sentence, but only soften it, she said, it shall not be death, but a deep sleep of a hundred years, into which the princess shall fall.
Snow White is laughter and sunshine and music, everything that's been missing from Briar Rose's life.
She sings national songs Briar Rose vaguely recalls hearing from shadowy ambassadors at parties she wasn't supposed to be at. She remembers sitting on the palace stairs and memorizing the foreign sounds, the cadence sharp and thrilling, just like how Snow White speaks, stressing syllables Briar Rose wouldn't dream of.
Snow White hums, the pitch sweet like chirping birds, and it makes Briar Rose remember singing, back when she was awake and could remember things like ranges and vibrato and finger positions on the piano keys. Once upon a time, she'd been called down to her mother's tea parties, and the courtesan ladies would sigh and bat their lashes and exclaim, "if only she wasn't our princess! She'd go to Rome for sure!" Her mother would smile, her mouth tight, "but she is our princess," and then Briar Rose would be sent to the gardens with her governess of the moment.
Briar Rose doesn't sing to Snow White, just listens when Snow White is distracted and singing under her breath, waits for the moments that Snow White forgets herself and her notes echo through the entire castle, bouncing off walls and landing in Briar Rose's ears. It's not even that Snow White's a gifted singer, just that she enjoys it, and Briar Rose enjoys the flush that creeps down Snow White's neck when she realises she's been caught again.
She likes to catch Snow White's laughter, bottle it up in the water baskets from the kitchens. Snow White doesn't notice because she's too busy being carefree, pulling Briar Rose from her frequent low-spirited fits.
"Don't be sad, Briar Rose," she says, and even though her hands are gentle on Briar Rose's face, her tone is commanding, so Briar Rose can't do anything but smile.
