Have you ever been successful at a New Year’s Resolution?
If so, what was it and why do you think you were successful?

I make resolutions all the time. Every time I notice a flaw in my character, in fact. This year I've been working on trying to keep my spirits up and my attitude up-beat. I think I've done pretty well, and intend to continue to work on it. At least I seem to have gotten the December blues beaten for once.

For Lent I usually forswear privation...

Hmm, can't say as to New Years Resolutions, but I did succeed with Weight Watchers, and those lessons-learned I think are applicable:

-- It was a goal I was serious about accomplishing.

-- I had enough control over the situation to succeed.

-- I had a support system (WW and friends, in my case).

-- I had silly-yet-effective incremental signs of success (related to support system).

Good Luck with whatever you want to accomplish in 2010!

yup, it's like that.
January 1998 I quit smoking (the LAST time)
It was DAMN tough. But I had a strong motive (the kid), I had great support (ie no one smoked around me anymore) and I no longer had to spend my breaks hanging out in the cold by the garbage...

I'm one of those that doesn't make resolutions. Mainly because I find that they are usually too difficult to keep, and I usually have forgotten what it was by the time the next New Year rolls around.

I find that I'm much more able to achieve something if I set a goal for myself. For example, Timothy and I have been planning a trip to Fraance to cruise the canals. We both think that we can do it this year even with the job layoff.

If I make a resolution I find that for me it's usually character based. One of the most difficult things of ourselves to work on. I think that's why I failed at them when I made any - and I was expecting to move mountains instead of grains of sand. ;)
