Ugh

I have been sewing all day today. Like seriously, I've had maybe four 30-40 min breaks since about 10:30am through 2:30am. And yet I feel like I've done nothing. I want this dress to be finished ( Read more... )

It sounds like you did an awful lot for one day. I must be really slow because what doesn't seem like much to you sounds like more than I could possibly accomplish in a day. (Of course, I also don't know how people find whole days to do nothing but sew.)

I think my problem is that I look at people like Redthreaded and koshka_the_kat, and they are sooo fast that I feel like I get nothing done. And I lucked out with two four-day weekends in a row because of the holidays. ;)

I don't know about redthreaded since she posts privately and I'm not on her friends list, but koshka_the_cat is definitely a fast seamstress. On the other hand, I think she's got a good stock of base patterns that don't require much mocking up, which always takes so much time. It also doesn't hurt that she's small which probably contributes to speed since each seam is fractionally reduced. You still get a lot done, and you seem speedy to me!

Ugh, I know exactly how you feel. That yellow dress I just made took FOREVER and it seemed nothing was getting done despite toiling away on it for hours on end. The worst!

I can imagine! Your dress had a ton of little details!

It sounds like you got a lot done, but maybe it doesn't feel like it because it's not visible progress, like cutting things out and trying things on. I think that the neckline piece is like a square fur-trimmed dickey with a large falling collar and a small standing collar. I've been looking at c.1880 detachable collars lately and they seem to have lots of weird combination-type things going on.

I've done the fur on the bodice itself, and then the dickey will go inside the edge of the bodice. I'm probably going to stitch it in place in the bodice so it doesn't go anywhere, but I haven't decided yet for sure. And yeah, the whole trying things on and mocking things up definitely slows me down!
