Athens Burning

Dec 08, 2008 22:50

What's happening in this city right now is simply unbelievable. The whole centre is burning down and nobody seems to be doing anything about it. It's not just us, the same thing is happening in Thessaloniki. But I live here and I care too damn much. In all her glorious ugliness, I always believed that Athens was the most beautiful city in the world ( Read more... )

the whole situation is just unbelievable.
it's very frustrating here because I can't find enough news and -- I had to call my parents because most of the channels won't even say where the troubles are in Thessaloniki and my brother works near Agiou Dimitriou (but he's okay *sigh of relief*)
and I can't believe what is happening. I've only been in the city centre and the idea that it burns down is just... *sigh*

He just made comments to the journalists Pavlopoulos and I wanted to beat him to a pulp. You know, even though I generally dislike him (he has this arrogant annoying style) I was positively impressed by his file for resignation. Even in the chance he knew in advance that it would not be accepted, it was still a good gesture. But you should just listen to him right now. Apparently they've done everything right and the only ones to blame are the "koukouloforoi". Because the police and the firefighters have all been in place and doing their job. If I were him I would hand in my resignation again and again and again until it got accepted. And if I were them, well I don't know. Earlier I thought it's complicated. It is probably no solution for the whole government to resign. Well now I'm not so sure anymore. I've stopped watching the news for fear of breaking the TV. So I'm here listening to Iron Maiden instead :/

This is simply incredible. Incompetence and ignorance in the political class, brought to a whole new level it seems. And what did those poor books do to them? What did the people living and working in the area do? Irresponsible brutes, the lot of them!

I was reading about it at lunch. Such a waste that centuries of preservation is destroyed by punks in mere moments.

I hope you and your family remain safe and the riots are controlled soon. *hugs*

My husband said "So some idiots just burnt the library of Alexander again, huh?" There's no punishment adequate enough for that.

I hope you and yours stay safe. *hugs*
