The way I see it, the way the world currently is, I think there were mainly two reasons for it.
First one was the casting. They were blown away by BC and wanted *him* to play the part.
Second, the audience is getting pretty sensitive about who is cast in certain roles and the impact it has on modern society with steriotypes and whatnot. I think I read on some interview that they thought a general white male would be safe and not get any specific group of people offended, but don't quote me as Iam not sure where I read it.
I personally liked the movie a lot and yeah, knowing who BC was playing kind of put me off at first, but going to the movies spoiled helped me cope with it a gread deal and enjoy everything else. I liked Chris Pine and Zacary Quinto and their chemestry on screen make it up for the small slip. Also, I think Cumberbatch is superb in any role he is cast in and he did his best with the little he was given and was able to make Khan a trully chilling villain.
