Ricardo Montalbán played Khan in the TOS episode 'Space Seed' and again in 'The Wrath of Khan' -- he was born in Mexico.
Del Toro would have been great, although he's not Indian either.
I grew up with TOS, and it has a special, almost sacred place in my heart. Yea, it had plenty of cringe-worthy moments, but TOS was definitely a case of 'the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.'
I liked Cumberbatch as Sherlock, but I wouldn't say I'm a fan either.
But even though I'm not happy with the spoilers I've heard, I'll still be sitting in the theater opening day. The characters are being played by different actors than I grew up with, but they're still like old friends to me, and I wouldn't miss a chance to see them again.
