Okay, now that my viewing scheme is fixed....
My list of games for the XboX is growing. Despite controversy, I do want to play the new Resident Evil. I've heard all points of view on it, read the arguments and dissertations, and figure I'll just make my own judgments upon playing the game myself. I think that's all anyone can do. And as I'm

Fallout is one of maybe 3 or 4 game series I actually follow, but this comment reads like a review on a website. XD;

I doubt I'll get an XBox 360 soon but then again you never know.
Nothing wrong with a wish list at all.

They're starting to go down for used ones, so you never know. Having experience with it now, I definitely recommend it.

What's the controversy with RE5? I haven't heard anything about that, but then I don't read much about the series. It doesn't quite have the same appeal for me as SH, but it's still very fun to play. Is this about the whole 'taking place in an African village' thing? Because if so, that's old. I can't believe anyone would still make a deal big about it. Or is it something else that's causing controversy this time, like the new partner system they added?

The racism controversy. It came out with the trailer, with scenes that...well, I can understand the point of view. A group of non-infected black men hostile-y dragging a white woman into an alley out of context does look bad. And the other scene, involving villagers brutally beating 'something' in a sack was a bit stretching it, but again, I can understand people discussing it and dissecting it as how it can be seen as a racist image.
But my biggest issue with the controversy is that when this all started, there was no context. All the hooplah was based on the trailer. The PA guys did a news article on it, and compared it to a Magic Eye picture after playing the game. It's a case of 'don't see it, don't see it, don't see it...someone points it out and outlines it and then you see it. Which, as was pointed out, says more about the person reacting than the image and theme itself ( ... )

I think the whole problem with racism (and sexism) in Japanese games is that we, here in the Western world, can only look at it in our own context. We come at them with our own American sense of history and racial/sexist issues. And I'm of two minds on it. On one hand, yes, we're bringing our world view and our historical view to it, and that can lead us to seeing things which weren't intended. But Japan isn't an isolated fortress, and isn't completely unaware of the history of racial issues in the US. I don't think there is deliberate racism going on in mainstream games, but is there casual racism? Sure. It's alive and well today, all over the world ( ... )
