Choosing a smartphone?

It's the second decade of the 21st century and time I got to grips with modern communication. More to the point, I want a widget that will let me access the internet on the move, that's more portable and smaller than my (currently dead) trusty netbook/laptop, ideally useable in one hand for when I have a small baby in the other ( Read more... )

You can have a play with my phone if I'm coming to visit on Monday. It's an Android phone (HTC Desire Z) and it does have a pull-out keyboard but it has an on-screen one too. It has no pointy stick.

I use a notepad-style app on it, which can email my notes to my gmail account (from where they're auto-forwarded to my proper email). I can also browse files via bluetooth and download to my laptop - haven't tried with a USB cable, will give it a go later.

I use the Google Maps app, which can access all the personalised maps I've made on the Google Maps website - I use this feature a lot.

It connects to our home wifi no problem. It's fine for web browsing, haven't tried videos or ebooks.

I've dropped it a few times and it doesn't seem to mind, but then I do have a (purple plastic) protective case for it. It has also undergone a small amount of baby-grabbing and didn't mind that either. I understand that there are screen-lock apps you can use to stop small people from accessing anything important on it, but I haven't tried any out

Android smartphone sounds like the thing. Mine has onscreen keyboard only & have never missed a hardware keyboard (despite preferring them for years previously) or a pointy stick - fingers work fine IME.

For transferring to computer your best bet is likely to be an app like Evernote or Simplenote which also has a PC/Mac version & which syncs to the cloud & thence to your computer (& vice versa).
