Some may say that it’s too late in the night. But for her, it’s the perfect time. The only time.

With her hair pulled back in a ponytail, a cap sheltering her face, she moves in the dark, making no sound, leaving no trace that she’s been there.

There is cold but she chooses to walk. It’s the only way to blend in. She’s spent most of her life trying to stand out that this feels foreign but this is the way. The only way.

She wraps her jacket around her and tries to believe it’s enough to keep her warm.

The place she’s heading to isn’t far and for that, she’s grateful. She walks past the gate and towards that place she knows by heart. And when she finds it, the slab of white marble greets her. She gazes at the name and numbers on it and sinks to her knees. It’s dirty but she doesn’t care. She lowers herself down and sings.

When I grow to be a lady,

I’ll be a queen

A lovely queen

She has vague memories of nights that she was too young to remember. She sees glimpses in her mind of those times when all she has ever feared were monsters in the closest and the haunting images of her nightmares.

Walking in a garden shady

In gown of green

With silver sheen

But this song she remembers so well. She remembers hearing this song whenever she’s afraid, whenever it’s too dark, whenever tears just don’t seem to stop. She remembers the most comforting, warmest of hugs that enveloped her as this song was sung by that one voice on nights sleep finds it hard to come by. She hears this song and it’s like the good dreams have returned and she finds herself lulled to sleep, a smile on her face and her then-little hands grasping bigger yet still delicate ones.

She hasn’t heard this song since she was 11. No one has sung this song for her since.

Maids in gold and white shall follow me

And suitors of a high degree

She figures it might be a futile attempt but she sings it to the dark over and over again. She blindly searches for that same feeling because it’s now that she needs it the most.

But she doesn’t find it. Instead, all she sees is a slab of white marble with a name and numbers.

She feels the tears come then. She sees no point in fighting anymore.

“Mom.”

Stephanie Hwang slumps down, a hand on the name on the marble, and weeps.

Author's Note: Just my two cents on this whole mess that Tiffany's in. Yes, I agree that it's her fault. She's not a child who has no control over her actions. Choosing the geotag of Tokyo with the Rising Sun Flag is a very dumb mistake and as a fan, I wish she took the time to think of her actions.

The backlash I can understand (I come from the Philippines where many of the Japanese soldiers of that time who came here tortured, killed, and raped. They flung babies up in the air only for the poor angels to land on bayonets. Take note I said "many" not all. Because there were good ones).

What I cannot accept and understand is all the death and rape threats being sent to Tiffany. What I also find very foul is dragging her late mother into this mess. Those of us who have the gift and privilege of being with our mothers may never fully understand how it is to lose a mom, especially at such a young age, but it doesn't take another Einstein to figure out that it's not sunshines and rainbows at all.

On a lighter note, the song I used here is actually something that my mom used to sing to me when I was a kid and I had nightmares or I had a hard time sleeping. I never found out the title of the song or who created it. Anyone got any here knows the title and stuff? :)
