Internet Personals: Fandom Seeks Strong Female (Superhero?) Film

The latest controversy in comic book land seems to be the outcry of "Why don't women have good comic book movies?!?!?!" Seems that some ladies out there are tired of the crappy and sparse nature of female superhero films. Cannot say I blame them to an extent. Supergirl, Catwoman, and Elektra are embarrassing to most comic book fans of either ( Read more... )

Actually the uproar was over an essay from someone saying that Women Don't Get Super-Heroes. So because ALL women don't really like action movies, they don't need female super-hero movies. That its silly, like doing Sex & the City with all-guys...

It was a vastly stupid article and a multitude of people responded to it...

My understanding was that the jackass who wrote that was doing so in reply to an editorial on ropeofsilicon.com that was of and only about female superhero films. I came at it with that article in mind. I agree with the dogpiling on that guy for being an idiot, but I wanted to provide a 'none of the above' viewpoint. Mine is based on Hollywood being generally bad stewards of both comic book and female main characters in general.

When you put big Hollywood guys in charge of making girl superhero movies, they're going to use the cheese and skin formula, thinking they have to market to horny nerds while at the same time keeping the movie PG so families will come too. Whether or not the story is any good is not a concern. Superhero chick moviemakers focus on fights and explosions instead of story, like they do any superhero guy movie. That's why they suck.

But plenty of women like Buffy. One girl told me the reason why she's running in a marathon was so she could be Buffy for a day. The action on Buffy is choreographed by infants, so chicks don't really care whether the fight scenes look authentic. They just like to see girls kick ass and bicker with their boyfriends and be catty with their girlfriends/gayfriends. If Supergirl had a few friends like Wondergirl, Robin (punk chick version), and Dazzler around, they could fight crime and talk about shoulder bags afterwards.

So you'd just meet the two sides in the middle and make "Spandex in the City"?

Or maybe the Luna Brothers' Ultra. Or better yet Empowered...
