I wasn't upset by DotNG; mostly because I'm not a real Fourth World fan. What I am upset about is that Barda, ex-general of the Female Goddamn Furies, didn't get to go down fighting her ass off. The other wankers from Apokolips and New Genesis, fine, I don't give a rat's ass. But Barda was pretty much mistress of warfare on Apokolips. She should have beaten the crap out of the killer before he got in a lucky shot.

Off panel and in a kitchen to boot. Well, it's where they have the refrigerator, after all...

Now that is rather lame. I am sure the excuses will be coming from Starlin and DC editorial any day now. I just hope nobody at DC tries the "if it had been Scott instead of Barda" style excuses. Obviously it wasn't and wouldn't have ever been written that way or else we would be having this conversation...

I can see it making some sense in a "Big Mystery" sort of way like, "Who the hell is bad ass enough to do this to Barda?" Knowing her strength and the emotional attachement the character had being Mister Miracle'w wife. It could have been that they were going for a different reaction, but failed miserably. (Though even I don't think I can excuse the kitchen death as a slip up.

At the end of the day, they should've asked..
What Would Kirby Do?
Jack was an old school guy, but even he would've had enough respect to not punk Barda out like that. Plus Cosmic Battles are more fun to draw than CSI domestic crime scenes.

I guess I should be glad that I avoided this death gimmick fest.

Jack was an old school guy who BASED BARDA ON HIS OWN WIFE Roz Kirby. Somehow I think this scene would have gone down badly with The King. ;)

Heh. But I was honestly much more offended by Scott's DARRRRK VENGEAAAANNCE thoughts than Barda's lame, lame offing. (And oh, that was LAME!) If we were going to get a spectacularly OOC death, we could at LEAST have gotten an IC death scene.

Still, symbolically, one could argue that Starlin just wrote a scene where Jack Kirby comes into the kitchen and finds his beloved wife dead. Only on a symbolic, unintentional level, of course. But still... quite odd.
