I just know this is going to be more fuel for the alt-reality contingent.

As I said above, it is also used as some sort of superiority complex.
When I hear it being used, it is just like scraping a rake over a chalkboard to me.

fans seem to like continuity.
alt universe is a way of saying: don't worry non-believer! spiderman is alive and well and did not actually get killed by superman as was written in this obscure crossover!
canonization is a leaky ship when it comes to 50 year old super heroes whove been going on mind boggling adventures every 2 to 3 weeks for that long.
so was the punisher really a veitnam vet... because that would make him like 80 now.
the need to reinvent, with or without an alt reality proclaimation, is always there. but it's not always a good marketing thing, fans grow to like their characters as they are.
but you can't deviate too much becasue then you get crap like that 2099 series... and it's back to the drawing board.
let's make the hulk purple.
the thing should be more of a sort of limestone color.
spiderman needs more legs.

but really "alternate reality" could be applied to any work of fiction and be taken seriously so long as the material at hand takes it's own pre-existing universe seriously enough and doesn't permeate the stench of the post modern. even then it might work and even have a joke come from the irony of the term.
in the words of bart simpson.
don't have a cow man.
