Keith jumps in the air to catch the final throw before a snack break. He makes a perfect catch and does a small jig before slamming the football to the ground and yelling "Touchdown!" He picks up the ball and slides it under his arm and walks closer to his game partner ( Read more... )

Trying to ignore the hoots and hollers from the group of young men I grin at him. “Now,” I say as I grasp his bicep with my free hand to stop him from pulling my arm out of socket with his vigorous swinging, “now we find something to eat before I starve to death.” I keep our clasped hands together at our sides but I don’t take my hand from his arm. Instead I use it to pull us closer.

The park seems extra nice today as we walk down the worn dirt path. The birds are all singing, there is a slight breeze rustling through the trees, people are running by with dogs and kids are playing hide and seek amongst the bushes giggling at one another as they race around. It’s just a great day to be outside.

“Oh!” I exclaim, spying my favorite thing to eat on days like this, “Cotton candy! I hope they have the blue kind.” Tugging on his hand I make my way over to the stand.

Keith giggles as Dan squees over the tiny cotton candy stand in the distance. The two grown men seem to blend in flawlessly with the elementary school children playing around them.

"I'm kinda partial to the pink myself" Keith says between his laughter. This day has been perfect and now a sweet treat would top it off. Keith sighs as he breathes in the fresh air tinted with a sugary scent.

“Pink is lame.” I state, “Blue is so much better.”

I let go of his arm to free up my hand so I can reach into my back pocket and pull out my wallet. Flicking through the few bills I have I quickly come to the conclusion that I don’t have enough to get any of the candy.

“Damn,” I sigh, “I don’t have enough.” Disappointed, but trying my best to hide it, I turn to him, “Guess I won’t be getting any after all.”

Keith watches as Dan whips out his wallet in excitement only to realize he didn't have enough money. He watches Dan become frustrated and decides to fix the issue.

"I can pay for it." He says as he pulls out a wad of bills from his track pants. "I don't mind." He grins as Dan nods reluctantly. "We'll have a blue and a pink please." Keith says to the vendor and pays for the candy.

The two continue on the park path and Keith notices that Dan is awfully quiet. He tugs a piece of cotton candy off of the cone and slowly places it in his mouth as an awkward silence sweeps over the perfect day.
