I'm going to ask a stupid question, is this the same as chiaroscuro? And would something like my default icon apply is so?

Not a stupid question at all - i just misspelled it yesterday /facepalm That's what I get for not proofreading things, I guess.
I'm not sure that your default (assuming it's that one you commented with) has quite the levels of contrast that the examples do, but I'll leave it to your judgement to make an icon that you feel fits the theme.
