White is the colour her skin looks when she’s lying in the snow, her back against the wet slush, her blue robes stained with melted ice. Her hair is like spun gold, stuck to her face as if she’s been swimming in the lake. She smiles at me, her cheeks flushed and her lips as pink as the roses that grow outside the Herbology greenhouses.
“Cedric,” she says, in crisp French, her voice low and warm enough to melt the ice beneath us.
White is the colour of the rose I give her on the eve of the Yule Ball. She takes it in her porcelain-like hands, spinning the stem until the petals form a blur of a shape.
“Fleur,” I say, before touching my fingertips to her neck.
White is the colour of the tapestry we meet under when I’ve finished Charms on a Friday. I see her there as I approach, my footsteps light atop the ancient carpet. We glance around discreetly, before tucking ourselves away in a classroom that is no longer used. It’s all hands, fingertips and mouths for a few minutes until the craving for one another has temporarily ceased.
White is the colour of her patronus, a petite dove that flies above our heads and performs tricks and loops before landing on its mistress’ shoulder. Fleur smiles, an enchanting smile that causes me to lose my breath for a few seconds. I shouldn’t be dazzled this way by a girl, a girl three quarters my size and has twice the amount of attitude I do. But I am.
White is the colour of the piece of parchment she gives me before the third task; her script elegant and worded in dark pink ink. In five words, she’s made my life complete.
I will stay with you, she writes.
