I love this scene sooo soo much. This and the argument they have at the beginning of the episode too - where Sam shoves Dean. The look on his face, and on Dean's! so much pain - so awesome.
Man, I love that moment so much! ♥ I think this is the only time I ever felt that it was right for Sam and Dean to go separate ways. It felt like a beginning and not like an ending; the beginning of a healing process that would eventually lead to the brothers' reunion, stronger than ever for having chosen to be with each other. I think it's the only time they let each other go with mutual understanding and love, instead of anger or disappointment.
Another moment would be when Castiel asks Dean for the (S)amulet and Dean flat out refuses and even when he finally gives it up, he is hesitant and can barely bring himself to hand it over, telling Castiel he better not loses it. It's obvious how attached he is to it; it's the tangible symbol of his bond with Sam, and since his bond with Sam is somewhat brittle in that moment in time, that weight around his neck is even more reassuring than usual.
Yes. I think it was such an important move for them. They had come to a climax in their relationship and this was the only way to move forward. And it's great to think that this is followed by seeing what actually happens if they continue to stay parted. Not good!

I know. They made such a big deal here about how much it means to Dean and then to have him throw it away later on is SO painful. I keep thinking about that moment and to this day I can't think exactly why Dean did that. I know he was hurt by what he saw in "heaven", but enough to throw something so dear to him away? So painful...
