Anyone else shocked/flabbergasted/thrown for a loop over this premiere? It was so not what I was expecting or bracing myself for at all!

I like it. Sam is thin and subdued, though, which makes me wonder about his mental state. Dean is obviously all fight, all the time. If by 'going back to season 1', they meant this, I am good with that too.

They both have a very distilled Samness or Deanness to them from the year apart. But they wear the scars of their history too which I very much appreciate. I'm worried about both of them, but I think we're supposed to be. I did very much enjoy the flipped roles, giving Sam the human story this time and Dean the 'somethings wrong' plot.

Actually, I thought the opposite about Purgatory -- that it was pure because there was a clear sense (for Dean at least) of right and wrong - or more the fact that it lacked the moral ambiguity that seems to have plagued Dean the past couple of seasons.

I'm looking forward to the 'mending' as well -- and crossing my fingers for it. There's plenty other things being set up for that can introduce conflict, I don't need it to be between Sam and Dean anymore.

That being said, I really enjoyed the episode.

I actually think that demon getting the best of Dean there was intentional and telling that "Dean distilled" isn't 100% optimal like he's telling himself. It felt very pointed. Like alot of things in this ep did. :)

I'm pleased and intrigued so far! Very worried going in, but they've set up something interesting with Dean and Sam. I think things are not as they appear with both brothers, and I'm looking forward to seeing where they're going with this.

Sam, and his brother substitute dog! Dean and his thing-that-looks-like-a-Slayer's-scythe! OH BOYS ( ... )

OMG:
One thing I liked was that, even though there's clearly a distance between them now and they're not telling each other the whole truth, they were seen sitting down and actually talking things through. In the hotel, when they showed day turning to night and them sitting there awkwardly trying to communicate with each other? That was pretty awesome.FRIGGIN YESSSSSS. Because they were actually attempting to communicate! Which hasn't happened in FOREVER. They like didn't talk to each other all last season. This whole premiere was full of actual Winchester conversations. LIKE WHAT ( ... )

I am SO RELIEVED, because from your initial reaction I couldn't tell if you loved it or hated it!

Even though it seems like they're treading well-worn ground - hey, lets keep important secrets from each other, that always turns out well - I think they've really made a lot of progress in their relationship. In seasons past, I could see it playing out much differently, with Dean blowing off Sam's actions and pretending that everything's okay, and Sam pretending not to notice how Dean really feels, and the whole thing exploding in angst in the middle of the season. But it's like...okay, they're actually expressing what they're thinking and feeling! Progress! Even when Sam asked about Purgatory, and Dean initially gave some kind of "you couldn't possibly understand" non-answer? Sam pressed further, and Dean actually talked about it ( ... )

I liked this opener, granted it was a little slow at times, but it left me wondering and excited/fearful for future episodes, such as:

#1: The gloves are totally coming off between Crowley and the Winchesters, so I am excited as to how this will progress.
#2: Where's Meg in all this? And how will she react to Hell's Gates possibly closing? Will she be on Team Winchester, or Team Crowley?
#3: Most importantly, I think Sam is lying to Dean. When Dean first disappeared, Sam was understandably freaked, and all of the sudden didn't bother to look for him? Something bad is going on....
#4: Dean's humanity must be gone by this point. First having to survive Hell, now Purgatory, I'm surprised he can even function....

I really did love how much the brothers actually TALKED in this episode. Like actual long conversations where they actuall SAID things. That in itself bodes well for S8.

I know, out of everything I really loved, the real communication between the boys feels like the best signal for the future. The lack of it was a big reason why S7 (and S6 in large part) was so frustrating. Some of my favorite scenes of the early years were them talking stuff out, coming from opposing sides, butting heads, neither completely right or wrong, but they pushed each other to a more balanced place and then move forward. I think what's really been missing is a strong and active Sam to push back, but with this new setup, Carver used it to kickstart the rudder again last night.
