There are actually quite a few brotherly moments in that episode I absolutely love; the one you mention is certainly amongst them. I think there are two other moments that stand out to me: Firstly, Dean sleeping soundly in the passenger seat, while Sam is driving. In the first half of the season we often see Dean restless in his sleep, haunted by nightmares about hell. But here, in his beloved Impala, with Sam at his side, he seems to sleep peacefully. Secondly, Sam and Dean crashing in Bobby's study, both positioned in each others line of sight, so the first thing they would see when they open their eyes would be each other. Like they need the reassurance of the other being nearby. I am sure Bobby's house has guest rooms, so it always struck me as out of the ordinary that they chose to sleep together like that. :)
Thank you so much for mentioning these moments also. I totally agree.
I think it was in one of my motel posts that I remarked on Sam and Dean sleeping right next to each other at Bobby's - for exactly the same reason you mention here. Bobby must have guest rooms but they choose to sleep on the floor and the sofa. Now, it could be convenience of filming but I'd like to think it's because of the reassurance it gives them to be that close. Also...I love the way Sam's foot catches Dean's pillow when he passes him. I always considered this a fab brotherly gesture.
And lovely observation about Dean sleeping peacefully in the Impala with Sam by his side....(awwwwww)
I find it curious that sometimes I will look back on an episode and think there aren't many bro moments and then when I reeaally look, there are heaps.
I find it curious that sometimes I will look back on an episode and think there aren't many bro moments and then when I reeaally look, there are heaps. Heh, yeah, that happens sometimes. I never think of 4x02 as a particularly exciting episode, but there are so many strong moments between the brothers - Dean complaining about Sam forgetting his pie, Sam and Dean taking turns at saving each other, Dean subtly checking Sam for a concussion, Sam helping Dean up from the kitchen floor, Sam's concern when he realises something is wrong when Dean wakes up - that I love the episode to bits. :)
The Meg and dean scene is a favourite. She was the first demon we met, and the first one where we (and the boys) learned about how they possessed people. To meet that woman, and hear here tragedy puts a whole other perspective on the fight against demons. Esp as the story of her sister not coping after her death hits so close to home. And while its true , its a shock to realise the boys are not heroes in everyones eyes.
I also love the Cas and Dean scene at the end. Its so intense, and as always, the way Jensen can portray fear is so subtle yet unmistakeable.
Oh yeah...in terms of other character moments in this ep those were stand outs. It was great to see Meg again and yes, to see that the boys aren't always hero's in others' eyes was poignant.
The Dean and Cas scene was very powerful. I love Cas being all threatening and Dean being, rightly, terrified.
This episode is great looking back on it because Sam and Dean are still working together and feeling good about each other. They rescue each other a couple of times. One piece that stuck out for me was after Dean saves Sam from Henrickson. In the car, Sam is beating himself up about how they handled Jus In Bello and Dean, in his own way, tells him to let it go.
