I Did It!

Success! I came home, had dinner, climbed into bed, and passed out for 12 hours. It was glorious. Already I feel much more myself. For the first time ever, I've also been keeping a paper journal as well. The repetitive motion of writing by hand helps to calm down (to quote J. K. Rowling in a completely different context) "the monster in [my] chest."

Before I run out the door to work, I'll jot down a quick Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab review (as I'm wearing it right now).

Penny Dreadful
Also called Gallows Literature. A dime novel rife with melodrama, horror, madness and cruelty; a ten cent analogy of vice and virtue in conflict. Soft perfume evocative of noir heroines over rich red grave loam.

In the imp: It smells quite earthy in the imp and I mean a literal earthiness. Like dirt and flowers.

Wet: Exactly as advertised: a pretty floral perfume and...dirt. I really like this combination as odd as it sounds. I think I can sniff patchouli in this one and it isn't giving me the "dirty hippie" vibe! Okay, okay, I give up, my ban on patchouli is lifted. I'm fairly certain it's the note giving Penny Dreadful the "earth" scent, and it's the same "clean musky earthiness" as in The Body Shop's White Musk body wash.

Dry: There is vague spiciness that comes forth from my wrists that I swear reminds me of...gingerbread. I kid you not. It's gingery, or perhaps like cinnamon or clove, but not in any foody way. It's definitely a sweet sort of scent that is completely unlike the floral perfume (which I think has roses, or perhaps violet). A bit on the "sexier" side than what I normally wear, but it's warm and a nice fall transition scent before I bust out my bottle of Pumpkin II for Halloween.

Throw and wearlength: Throw is unusually strong on me; I turn my head and another wave of Penny Dreadful wafts about me. Wearlength is also quite long. Yesterday I applied it before I left for work and I could still smell it going strong when I got home. At least 12 hours.

Penny Dreadful, you are definitely a big bottle purchase. Too bad Bear isn't such a huge fan. "It just smells like generic perfume," he complained. "And I'm not a huge fan of perfume." I don't know what generic perfume smells like spicy, gingery earth and sweet flowers, but Bear's nose isn't exactly the most discerning. The only scent that's ever gotten a reaction from Bear was last year's Pumpkin II, which smelled exactly like pumpkin pie to him, despite the tobacco, champa flower, and carnation notes. (He did also like Alice, if I remember correctly, so apparently carnation is a big hit with Bear.)

I got devoured alive by mosquitos at Bear's parents' house on Sunday. I met his relatives from Reading, England and got to say hi to his sister, who was back on American soil after having traveled to Afghanistan and England for the past year and a half. She did offer to let Bear and me visit her in Oxford when she attends Lady Margaret Hall next year as she knows I am an enormous Tolkien, Carroll, and Pullman fan.

Still manic. I am excessively excited and energetic about trivial things, but that may also be because I managed to get some decent rest last night. Must focus, J. Focus.
