One more note: I really like Sylar. A lot. I always feel great series/books are driven by great antagonists, and Sylar rocks. He's evil without being over-the-top 80s-supervillain evil, and a little off without being traditional "I'm crazy so I'm going to use the black magicite to destroy the world" type crazy. He effectively avoided both major pitfalls most villains hit. He pulls off the "obsessed with understanding how things work but pissed at being so insignificant most of my life" thing very well.
In terms of FF villains, sephiroth was better than most. But FF games have this terrible habit of justifying everything the bad guy does because he's either A) pure evil (Exdeath, Zeromus, Golbez, etc.), B) crazy (Sephiroth, Kefka), or a bit of both (Kuja, Yu Yevon). It's boring. I know all kinds of people who got into the series with 7 still can't remove the rose-tinted spectacles, but Sephiroth wasn't really all that amazing. Hell, 7 wasn't really all that amazing. *puts up heat shield, preparing for the flames*
first off, i respect your comprehensive knowledge of the ff world, but you must concede that in the video game world (to the date of ff7), sephiroth was about as good as it got. you just have to take into account how things have progressed since then.
for instance, in a movie analogy, if you look at the original star wars, the movie was - and still is - epic. if you look at it now though and compare it to the plot content, acting caliber, and character depth that are expected in good movies nowadays, it's not really all that amazing. even darth vader.
i don't exactly know what i'm going for here, but i suppose i should say that *i feel* (<-please note) that sephiroth is to gamers of our generation as darth was to movie-goers of yore. just one of the definitive bad guys, even though he may not be better than those in good books and what-not

all things aside, i agree that sylar is an awesome villain in almost every way. almost don't want to see him go at the end of the season (if he does).
