why do people say "aka" so much?

I never say it unless something calls for it. It's sort of dumb to say "also known as" and it's sort of fun to say it once in a while.
But it's like candy apples. They hurt your teeth so much and they're such a pain to eat it's like..okay, I'm only going to have these once a year.
