The silence was unusual. It hung heavy and tense, unlike any previous silences in which the pair had indulged. Utena only let it go for so long before she looked up to check on Michiru. Her state was.. unsettling. The prince had yet to see her companion's composure crack in this way. Her heart ached painfully.
"Mi-Michiru!"
She couldn't just let a girl stand there and cry! Especially not a girl she cared for so greatly! So Utena reached out and pulled Michiru to her, hugging her close. Her cheek rested atop soft, green hair.
"D-Daijoubu... Michiru.. Honto-ni.." Utena whispered what words she could formulate over and over.
Michiru let out the softest whisper of a sob. A caught breath as Utena drew her into a hug, and she rested her head against the girl prince's shoulder, arms wrapping around the slender waist of the woman she had grown to care for so much.
She didn't want to let her go, so she wouldn't. Not immediately. If anything her arms tightened around Michiru's slender frame, keeping her close. It was the protective instinct in Utena showing itself.. even if she was essentially trying to protect Michiru from the prince herself. Plus.. she just.. wanted to hold her again. Perhaps it would be the last time..
"Suki dayo, Michiru. Gomen nasai."
She couldn't help but apologize. If she hadn't gotten in the way.. if she had listened to her head.. if she had done anything but what she'd done, Michiru wouldn't be hurting this badly. Her family wouldn't be on the verge of extreme disaster. Utena felt the weight of blame on her shoulders, but she couldn't stop herself from wishing they could continue on.

So she stood there, and let her shoulders slip down, let her head hang softly, and let the tears begin to roll slowly, silently, from her eyes.
