I just want a woman who's there for her competence, even if she is a villain.
That would be most welcome, yes.
I admit to knowing nothing about Sebastian Moran, as I haven't yet read any of the canon stories containing him! I'd do better to register an opinion once I have :)
Since John is (on the surface) a fairly ordinary-seeming bloke, matter-of-fact, takes things more or less in stride; in contrast to a very socially eccentric Sherlock

Moran was a military sort... so I half wonder if they'll introduce some serviceman that John knew.
John will trust him BECAUSE he knew him in service, only to later on find out "Whoops, I work for the chap that tried to kill you and that gangly thing you blog about."
But for his personality... as big a departure as Moriarty turned out to be, I can only guess we'll see more of that in Moran. Maybe someone who's another psycho killer "sponsored" by Moriarty, only to become so useful as such that he moved up ranks to be Jim's 2IC.
Although part of me is terrified it could be Anthea.
I agree with the first half of this, Moran being ex-Army that John knows. Although I don't know that he'll be in the next series for long if at all. He could only really be in Reichenbach as the plots for the others have strong non-Moriarty characters.
I think Moran is way easier to keep "in character" because he's pretty much one note of evil. Classical psychopath, at least that is what a gather from the books. I like to think he'll be Jim's lover, not best friend like John and Sherlock (slash aside, I still think of Sherlock and John as just friends), but I have no idea why I got this in my head. Probably because modern day Jimmy is very likely gay (at least in my head canon) and book Moran is so very hurt by his death.
When I was first head-casting in my mind, I had chosen John Finnemore as Sebastian Moran. I know. Out of the box. But I just thought it would be a great twist to have a nice looking, comic actor to play him, instead of your every day mean looking psycho - plus, John Finnemore! C'mon! No one would suspect Arthur!!
After I started watching Dr.Who, I thought maybe Cristopher Eccleston would make a pretty nice Sebastian Moran, though.
SPOILERS FOR WHAT EPISODES THEY'RE DOING NEXT SEASON AHEAD, PEOPLE!!Either way, I don't think he'll be introduced next season. Would

I love spoilers, too, but they're very good at eluding me! I had to make a lot of fuss on Twitter the other day just to get my hands on some. Web-searching wouldn't cut it...

And I think Eccleston would be brilliant as Moran. He is, in fact, who I was hoping they'd cast. If they cast the character...
